Behind the Brush - Marie Schlederer

Who are you and what do you do?

Hello, I am Marie Schlederer among the many things I do, collecting indoor plants, traveling, eating, looking after my family, enjoying loads of joy and laughter, I am also a lover of creating art.

Why do you do what you do?

The magic and science behind images and colour and how they affect us has always fascinated me, it has inspired me to be creative is so many areas of my life other than just creating and sharing art.

What’s your background?

I grew up on the South Coast of NSW on a beef cattle farm, not much into riding horses, I was always spending time drawing, taking photos or daydreaming while watching clouds pass by.

I studied Graphic Design and Photography at University as I was mesmorised by the advertising world and how impactful the use of imagery was to create human interaction. After many successful years I was drawn back to my love of colour and creating art. This then also lead me to spend many years studying different colour and vibrational healing modalities which I reflect upon when creating art.

How do you work?

Currently my favourite medium is oil paint on smooth linen surfaces. It allows me to layer transparent colours and shapes. When starting a series of work I think of an emotion or feeling I would like to bring through. This then leads to colour and surface size choices. Sometimes I feel the work may need to be large and expansive to allow colour to wash over the viewer, then there are other times I feel the works need to be small and intimate, a little more introspective.
